WEXLER.Flex ONE: a flexible screen reader

Wexler.Flex Readers

The name of Wexler may not sound too much for us (or maybe yes, you never know), unless we are fans of Argentine soap operas or the music press; but maybe, just maybe, maybe now we dare to look a little at what this brand can offer us.

And why might we be interested browse the Wexler website? Maybe it will be nothing, maybe it is not the bomb, but this young Russian company, created in 2008, presented us last April the first electronic reader of the world that incorporates flexible screen.

Moment Wexler products are sold in Russia (where they claim to have a market share of around 35%), as well as in the Commonwealth of Independent States and some European countries, although they plan to expand to the rest of the world throughout 2013.

As I said, this reader came out in April, but we may be interested in taking a look at the gifts of kings that we have pending. Come on, just kidding, I actually check it out because it inspires me lot curiosity; If I stop to think, it is not easy to acquire and its price is not particularly interesting either (it ranges between 300 and 330 USD), so I will not put the Three Kings before the problem of having to locate it.

Características técnicas:

If we rely only on these technical characteristics, surely we can think of a few very similar readers and even higher, but none of them have a flexible screen. It is not essential, but it is the most interesting (and novel) that this reader offers.

As the flexible screen is the newest thing that the reader provides, we will see what advantages can it bring (As always, from my point of view, yours can be very different):

  • Does not scratch. Well, sure it can be scratched a little, but it will be much less delicate in that regard than a traditional reader with a glass screen.
  • La Screen resolution It's 1024x768, which puts it on the same level as the HD displays carried by the latest readers from Kindle, Onyx Boox, Kobo, and other prominent brands.
  • Es more comfortable to carry than a conventional reader, since it conforms to the holes in which we put it (bag, pocket, folder, even the suitcase).
  • Su weight is lower than the PRS-T1 and PRS-T2 (readers that boast of their lightness), which makes it very suitable for trips, whether they are long commutes or simply reading on the subway on a daily basis.
  • This is not from the screen, but the Storage capacity and the fact of being multiformat plates they are also very interesting aspects.

We have seen the potential benefits of the flexible display, now the general reader disadvantages:

  • Unable to expand storage by means of cards (given the capacity of the reader, it is a lesser evil).
  • El price it is a great disadvantage, especially since there are many readers on the market with more features at lower prices.
  • La battery duration, of only two weeks compared to the four, six and even eight that other readers offer.
  • No Wi-Fi connection (and much less 3G), so, as it does not have a card, the only possibility to pass books to it is through the microUSB cable.
  • El screen step it's a little slow, and the soda has a black screen which, in the long run, can be annoying.

As I said at the beginning, the reader as it is is curious, but not very interesting except as a whim and for a similar price we even have 9,7 ″ readers like the Onyx Boox M92 (or its clone the Tagus Magno) that offer us many more possibilities.

However, we cannot rule out that the development of flexible display technology turn it into something interesting in the more or less near future.

Here you have a unboxing of Goodereader that I hope you find interesting.

Uis, it looks like a toy

Completely agree. In fact I was planning to post it tomorrow, but it seemed to me that a lot of people would take it as a joke.

I agree with the toy aspect and it seems to me that this is precisely where its grace lies. I do not see far the moment when a screen appears that is just that and you plug it into the mobile.

Sounds like an interesting idea to me. It would be something like the Beagle (https://www.todoereaders.com/un-e-reader-por-990-euros-conoce-el-nuevo-ereader-beagle.html) but less limited, right?

You are right. Something like the Beagle, but instead of being a mere extension of a mobile application, it functions as an enlarged screen of the mobile.
The electrinca ink has already reached a very satisfactory refresh rate and it does not seem to me that it is necessary to reproduce video or be in color.

Despite everything, its flexible screen is very interesting in addition to being very resistant to falls and blows from other videos that I have seen. I really find that the price is a lot but it must be for the screen and everything that it brings (like the case and the charger)

Well, the truth is, I do not agree with what is said above. Rather the opposite, I have had the Wexler for a month. Flex one and I consider it a marvel, without SD, nor with WIFI, nor digital screen and with a decent cover. The price of 79,90 does not seem excessive compared to others with such a number of superfluous options. The formats that Fb2 and Epub reads are enough although the Pdf is txungo if you want to read in this format you better do it on a Tablet. An interesting option is that if you transform an ebook in pdf to Epub the result is usually quite poor, the Flex one turns it into a readable screen although with defects, but not as many as the Nooks, Sony or others that I have tried. A small flaw is the battery life, although the two weeks are not bad for this price.
