DRM: an introduction to this complicated 'solution'

There are more and more tools related to the ebook: powerful eReaders, large stores, applications for self-publishing, etc ... However, the copyright and private copy they are still stuck in a format that, far from being surpassed, they continue to insist on it. I mean the DRM, a format that many consider as a drag on the expansion of the ebook and that we are recently seeing how it is expanded by the recent web format, Html5.

What is DRM?

It seems that nowadays this question does not make sense, but there are still many people who do not know it or what, looking at how to acquire an eReader, they come across these initials, unknown to them. DRM is the acronym in English for Digital rights management, a software that is added to the ebook and that allows the publisher, author or distributor, to impose limits on that ebook such as copying, printing, sharing it or simply being able to view it on the device indicated.

Buying ebooks with DRM means that we can only use the ebook on the device where we download it, thus limiting the rights of the client, since the title is paid for.

This argument has been the most popular when it comes to fighting this format and the one that has made it less and less supportive.

However, the DRM not only or not always prohibits the use of the ebook downloaded on another device, sometimes this software restricts the use to a certain period of time, for which once concluded we stop having access to that ebook

I have a few ebooks with DRM, how do I see them?

To view ebooks with drm we will have to have it installed on the computer or device that we want to see it drm software, generally it is usually that of Adobe But there are other companies that supply this software to ebooks. Once installed and after obtaining the identification code that this software gives us, we will be able to see the ebook that we have bought. The process is muddy, recognize it even the distributors themselves, but affirm that it is the only method to fight piracy.

There are many times when we don't want the DRM but it is the only way to get the ebook, so there are many systems that our purchased ebook is freed from that software. This release has its pros and cons. DRM and HTML5, a nonsense?

Recently, with the popularization of new html standard, the use of DRM in this web format. Many claim that this is being achieved through pressure to W3C, the body in charge of legislating the web formats. I personally believe that associating DRM with html is an aberration. The html format is closely related to the Internet, who does not know it, and trying to restrict the format is like trying to restrict the Internet and therefore go against the principle of the Internet. I imagine that the W3C will enforce or allow DRM in the html but both developers and users will sideline and reject it as has happened to some ideas of the W3C. ¿ It does not seem to you?
