Tutorial: Remove DRM from Kindle eBooks

Amazon Kindle

Today we are going to discover through this simple but very complete tutorial how to remove DRM (Digital Rights Management) from all Amazon e-book models.

What is DRM?

As we can consult in Wikipedia the DRM is the Digital rights management (sometimes written also digital rights management) or DRM (acronym in English for digital rights management) is a generic term that refers to access control technologies used by publishers and copyright owners to limit the use of digital media or devices.

 Detailed steps to remove DRM

  1. First of all we must download and install the application Caliber, of which you can find an extensive tutorial on this same website, if we do not already have it installed on our computer
  2. Download the caliber completes that are included in DRM Removal Tools for eBooks
  3. Unzip the file that you have downloaded if your computer has not done it automatically and put the folder in a safe place since it will be very necessary in the following steps
  4. Access Caliber and select Preferences, after Change the behavior of Caliber, Advanced, Accessories and finally Upload file plugin
  5. Locate the folder we talked about in point number 3. Inside it there should be a folder called Caliber Plugins that we should select
  6. Select the first of the .zip files in it and open it. The way to open the file will depend on the program to decompress files that you will have installed
  7. A security box will appear which you must accept by giving the Yes that will appear on the screen
  8. Click on Accept in the next dialog box that will appear
  9. Repeat this process until you have added all the modules that are in the folder Caliber plugins
  10. Now we must configure the Kindle and Mobipocket DRM module (0. 4. 5) from the Plugins screen. We must enter the serial number of our Kindle model, without spaces, hyphens or any other element
  11. press Apply and Close
  12. Now we must download the Amazon Kindle app for computer if we do not have it already installed as it should be normal
  13. Once inside the application we must select in the left column, Archived content, where all the books that we have bought on Amazon should appear. Double click on all the books you want to download
  14. When you have downloaded all the electronic books you want or all the ones you want to check out, go back to Caliber and choose the option; Add books from directories, including subdirectories
  15. By now we should have all the DRM-free books in our library. If you already had imported books before, you will have to re-import them to check them out

It's important to remember:

Please note that removing DRM from books violates the terms of use of your Amazon account and for which we are not responsible. Everything you do with this tutorial will be at your own risk.

DRM is designed so that copyrights are not infringed. But, with it, you do not think about the rights of the user who has acquired the book, and wants, for example, to read it on another device.
It is as if you buy a book, made of paper, and you can only read it at home, and you cannot take it out of it. By removing that restriction (DRM), you could take the book out and take it wherever you want.

    Not everything is piracy.
    A greeting.

Hello, thank you very much for the information. I am also stuck in the tenth point since in the complements I do not see the way to put the serial number that on the other hand I do not have since I use the free kindel app for ipad, not a kindel with a serial number ..

The serial number is usually printed or noted on the device itself.

Thank you very much for the contribution. It has worked perfectly! I agree with Daniel Soler, I have paid for the book and it costs me a lot to read from the computer. I only need a few chapters and I am forced to work uncomfortably. I like to write notes on the sides of the sheet and, although I can annotate comments, it is not the same.
Thank you again very much for the contribution!

I am trying to do this to pass a book bought from amazon to a different brand ereader.
I use Linux and there is no way to do it. It all comes down (I think finally) to getting a kindle serial number to be able to do it on linux but the problem is that I do NOT have a kindle ereader. How can it be done? Thanks.
