Seven books you should read by Terry Pratchett

Terry Pratchett

Yesterday in the afternoon we knew the sad passing of Terry Pratchett, one of the great exponents of fantasy and science fiction novels, at 66 years of age and after fighting for years against a strange type of Alzheimer's, which he managed to make fun of for a long time with that good humor that he had as his flag. Such was his defeat to the disease that he wrote several books even though he suffered from it at a somewhat advanced stage.

As an inheritance Pratchett has left us a total of 65 novels, which the whole world will applaud now that he is no longer with us, but that in other times in some countries they were not able to appreciate. Today and to say goodbye to this writer who is already a legend, a fantastic legend of course, we wanted to create this article in which We are going to propose 7 novels by Terry Pratchett that you should not stop reading.

As you were already imagining, in the first place we are going to talk about some of the works of his series Discworld, which made him famous all over the world and made him the writer that he got to be. More than 40 books make up this series, but we have decided to keep the five that serve to start reading this enormous saga; The color of magic, Guards, guards!, death, Equal Rites e Pictures in action.

The Color of Magic (1983)

The color of magic is starting point of Discworld, in which we will meet some of the most transcendental characters of this wonder of more than 40 books and in which we will also meet Death, which you should not lose sight of.

If you really want to read Terry Pratchett's masterpiece in its entirety, you should start at the beginning and discover what color magic is first.

Equal Rites (1987)

Equal Rites is the third book in the saga Discworld, and in it Pratchett makes a criticism, we could say that bestial, against intolerance. One of the best known phrases in this book is; “Sorry, Esk, but girls can't be magicians. Not even women, of course, no matter how angry they may be ”in a clear example of the intolerance that existed.

It is an easy book to read, and in which despite what you may expect you will still laugh, thanks to the many jokes that the writer included almost on each page

Death (1987)

This is the fourth book in the series and in which he was closest Discworld of being finished by the strange movements of Mort, an apprentice sparing the life of someone who should be dead. Reading it will undoubtedly bring you a series of surprises that you can hardly expect, although we have already told you some.

Guards, Guards! (1989)

Pratchett's imagination had no limits and this novel is a clear example of it. And is that one of the great protagonists of the same measures two meters, although he is a dwarf called Carrot.

From death a Guards, Guards! We have left several novels on the way, but as we already told you these five novels are fundamental points of the saga from which you can start reading to fully understand the work. Be careful not to confuse the novel with reality since it will end up legalizing crime.

Pictures in action (1990)

It is the year 1990 when this novel is published, but in it we will witness the creation of cinema. If you are an inveterate movie buff, this novel should be cult for you. If you don't care about cinema, don't worry that you will like the novel and it will allow you to immerse yourself in the wonderful world of Terry Pratchett.

Outside Discworld There was also life for Terry Pratchett, who published more than 20 novels far from his best-known world and most of them with great success. Here are two examples that you should not stop reading.

Good Omens (1990)

The comic artist Neil Gaiman was Pratchett's traveling companion on that literary adventure, in which of course the touch of humor and irony could not be missing. And it is that throughout the novel they will tackle together subjects like the prophecies, the apocalypse and until the arrival of the antichrist.

This is one of his best known works outside of Discworld, and that we believe that no one should be lost.

Nation (2010)

Nation It happens to be the book that we could assign to hundreds of authors, rather than the good one by Terry Pratchett, and it is that Besides that it is not developed in Discworld, it does not have that dose of humor that was not lacking in any of the books of this wizard of literature.

In it he tells the story of Mau, a young man who becomes the only survivor of a tsunami that completely devastates an island.

The lack of Pratchett's characteristic humor and theme, we do not know for sure, but it could be related to the disease that was diagnosed to him just before he began to write this book.

    Thanks for the recommendation!

I couldn't agree more, especially with the last two. Discworld has so many books, I wouldn't know which one to keep.

For me, the best is "The Reaper." It contains essential lessons in love for the visa and for humanity.

  4.   Juan Antonio said

Sorry for the mistake, I wanted to write Life, not visa.

Good recommendations without a doubt. But Neil Gaiman is not a "comic book artist", but a writer ... and not just comic books.

I can't help but comment that The Color of Magic is incomplete without Fantastic Light, since inadvertently spoiling (how fashionable it has now become to use the word) is the inevitable continuation of The Color of Magic, as well as reading Fantastic light is incomprehensible if you don't read The Color of Magic before

Good Omens is a parody of the movie "Damien." As it is a classic horror movie (and "heir" to The Exorcist) it may be that if you are not fond of horror movies, it is normal not to associate the book with the movie.
