Selection 010213

One more week and some offers that have caught my attention. Obviously there are many more, for all tastes, but you have to put up with my subjectivity and trust a bit of my selection. I promise that the price is interesting, although the theme may not attract you too much. After my daring foray last week into the stormy world of the romance novel, today I hope to bring you something that we can consider more "of all audiences."

However, you are going to excuse me because today's selection cannot miss a classic that last monday he turned two hundred years old: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. On the other hand, I confess that the other day was only for the pain that the genre in question gave me, but today I promise you some more neutral themes (just a little).

Pride and prejudice

Pride and prejudice

Author: Jane Austen

Synopsis: The novel describes little more than a year in the life of a small group of young people in the field near London at the turn of the century, (from the 15th to the 23th) with George III reigning. At the center of this society is the lovable and very insane Bennet family, with their five marriageable daughters, ages XNUMX-XNUMX. Mrs. Bennet sees marriage as the only hope for her daughters because at the death of Mr. Bennet the girls will be left to their fate when Mr. Collins (heir to everything because the property is linked) takes possession. The bond, a kind of trust, implies that it is only transmitted through the male line, so that upon the death of the father, mother and daughters they will lose most of the fortune. Mrs. Bennet is very touched by the news of the arrival of a single man "of considerable fortune" to the neighborhood: Charles Bingley. Mr. Bingley has rented the Netherfield estate where he plans to temporarily settle with his two sisters, Ms. Bingley and Ms. Hurst, as well as his brother-in-law, Mr. Hurst. Mrs. Bennet hopes to marry one of her daughters to Mr. Bingley.

Soon after, Bingley and his group, which now includes his close friend, Fitzwilliam Darcy, attend a public dance in the town of Meryton. At first, Darcy arouses admiration for her graceful figure and her income of 10.000 pounds a year. However, neighbors quickly consider him proud, someone who despises them as socially inferior. In fact, the Bennet family considers it that way, when Elizabeth Bennet hears Darcy decline Bingley's suggestion that he take her out dancing, not finding her beautiful enough to deserve their attention. This comment hurts her pride and she takes advantage of any occasion to use her wit, allowing herself ironies that border on what is admissible in a young woman. Bingley, for his part, is very nice. He dances with several of the young women available on the premises, but from the beginning he shows a determined admiration for Jane Bennet, the eldest of the sisters. Eager to encourage this advantageous union, Mrs. Bennet tries to force Jane and Bingley to meet together.

Pride and Prejudice is not a copyright-free work? It is 200 years old, why buy it when it is legal to download it by other means?

Indeed, as I said, the work is two hundred years old and has an iron health, therefore, it is free of rights, so we have the option of downloading it without any type of hindrance. We also have the option to buy it if we prefer, hence it appears in the selection.

That a work is free of rights does not have to mean that nobody sells it, that there are no reissues, commented editions (which are no longer free of rights), etc. The criterion of the reader will lead you to decide on one or the other option. In fact, I still read this work on paper ... hobbies. 😉
