Kobo Aura Edition 2, a tough rival for Amazon devices this Christmas

Kobo Aura Edition

Many companies, such as Amazon or Apple have taken advantage of on black friday to offer your best deals and increase your sales. But even so, many large companies continue to rely on the Christmas campaign and thus save the best offers for this more commercial than religious event.

One of those companies that continue to bet on offering the best deals during the Christmas campaign is Kobo. The Rakuten ebook subsidiary has developed an offer on its devices together with its partners such as Fnac to make the purchase of certain eReaders more attractive.

This offerAt the moment, it is limited to a single model, although that model will now become a very attractive device for many lovers of ebooks. The Kobo Aura Edition 2 is a device that drops in price, remaining at 99,90 euros.

The Kobo Aura offers the features of a mid-range eReader for the price of a low-range

The Kobo Aura Edition 2 or Kobo Aura, as they have renamed it, is an eReader with a 6-inch screen. This screen is tactile, with lighting and with Carta HD technology from E-Ink. The resolution of this device is 1024 x 768 pixels and 212 ppi. A resolution below the Kindle Paperwhite but much higher than the traditional Kindle.

The Kobo Aura has the latest updates for Kobo devices and with Comfortlight technology, this means that we will not have lighting problems and even that we can read at night without the blue light on our device. All due to the latest updates that significantly improve the performance of Comfortlight technology.

Kobo Aura Edition 2

The internal storage of the eReader is 4 Gb, enough for many users who use Caliber to manage their eReaders, although small for those who do not use it and read a lot. Unfortunately this device does not have a microsd card slot, so we cannot expand the internal storage of the eReader. The supported ebook formats are quite a few, about 14 types of format, among which highlights the new Epub format and mobi format, a typical format among ebooks from the Amazon store.

The Kobo Aura Edition 2 has measurements that facilitate one-handed use

The measurements of the device are as follows: 159 x 113 x 8.5 mm and 180 gr. Small measurements and also a small weight that will help us to handle the eReader with one hand, something useful for many readers who read at night. The autonomy of the eReader is quite high and can last for months if we do not abuse the lighting of the device or the Wi-Fi connection.

We can currently access this offer through Fnac, Kobo's Spanish partner that will be offering this offer from the 11th to the 24th of
December and from 30th of this month to 6th January 2018, through its physical stores and through Fnac.es. This offer may last longer if it is well received, but at the moment the continuation of this offer has not been confirmed beyond these dates.

If we compare the Kobo Aura with other devices such as Amazon eReaders or OnyxBoox devices, it is true that Kobo Aura becomes very attractive for have a price of less than 100 euros and offer the characteristics of a mid-range eReader.

The truth is that I always wanted to try a Kobo but I am so used and happy with the Kindle ...

By the way, the Kindle Oasis 2017 is a real joy 😉

I bought one more Kobo for the question of book formats, but I am very sorry, it seems very limited with respect to the functions. I hope later to buy a Kindle that from what I have already seen ... amazing!

Hello, good morning, do you know any application (apk) with which you can turn pages and do other things with voice command.

That is, an APK to read electronic books with which you can turn pages, with voice commands, that is, when saying next, next, previous, prev or other words, the pages are advanced or returned.

    Hello, good afternoon.

I recently bought the Kobo Aura 2 and I have some problems, I don't know if it's because I don't know how to handle it, since it's the first one I buy, it's a defect, or that's just how it works.
    I comment below:

When reading, if the book is in PDF, I have to constantly increase the screen to see the larger letters, but the problem is that it takes a long time to fit it to the screen.
While I am zoomed in, the screen becomes black continuously and I find it difficult to adjust.
In short, it takes longer to adjust the screen to the proper size than to read the page itself.

If I use other formats such as Epud, previously going from pdf to epud, the book is out of square and many times the screen remains blank, or it simply does not appear in the electronic book when passing it from the computer.

Thank you very much in advance.

    Kind regards.

Roberto I think that the PDF is normal. No reader is adapted to reading that format I'm afraid. We would have to go to the largest 10 ″ (Remarkable) or even better than 13 ″ (Sony dpr-s1 or something like that and some more).
I have had the Kindle Oasis and you also have to increase the letter every time you pass the screen ... yes, it is quite fast and fluid compared to the Kobo (from what I have seen in videos).

Regarding the bad conversion from pdf to epub there I can't help you… are you using Caliber?

Well, I just bought it but I don't see how to do something as simple as going to the page ... I have to juggle the bar to find a page I want ... I think it's a big mistake ... I can't create the collections through Caliber, I downloaded something to be able to read with coolreader, but I got that after transferring the Caliber books to the ebook, and although they were in the internal memory of the ebook, I didn't see them later ... it told me that it didn't have any books. I bought it because they were epub compliant. but in the end to make them look better you have to pass them to kepub ... I don't know, I'm a bit disappointed, now I don't know if kindle was better then, because I was doubting between one and the other ...

At the time I had a Kindle Paperwhite (given to my mother) and I currently use a Kobo Aura H2O, here is a quick comparison:
The hardware of both machines is very good, excellent resolution to read, and since the readers have side light, a more than adequate contrast. What if the light goes from white to yellowish, what if using a magnifying lens you see that some letters have more defined edges than others ... it helps but is secondary.
If you can't read with one hand on a Kobo, you haven't read the manual, as there are three page break settings.

Not for PDF, I use a tablet for that:
What does Kindle have that kobo doesn't?
    1. Use Wikipedia, in Kobo you have to get the RAE
    2. Can be read in landscape mode. Sometimes it is comfortable.
    3. Proprietary book format. It is almost a forced marriage.

Brands, annotations, margins, fonts and sizes… they both have all of that.
