Kindle Voyage, the perfect eReader with an excessive price

Amazon

Almost a year ago Amazon officially presented the Kindle Travel, an eReader that improved on the Kindle Paperwhite that was on the market at that time, not only in its specifications, but also in terms of design. And it is that Amazon electronic books are the most popular and sold on the market, but they have never enjoyed a spectacular design.

However This Kindle Voyage in addition to being a very powerful eReader and full of new options and functions, arrived on the market boasting of a careful design, keeping the black color of previous devices, but with finishes in Premium materials that make it more than just any eReader. Of course, its design has caused its price to skyrocket and has made many users wonder if it is worth spending a fortune on this Voyage.

In recent days we have been lucky enough to be able to thoroughly test the new Kindle Voyage, thanks to Amazon Spain, and through this article we are going to show you a very complete analysis of this device and also, how could it be otherwise, our experience and opinion.

Design, one of the strengths of the Kindle Voyage

Although this Kindle Voyage maintains the design of for example the Kindle Paperwhite or the basic Kindle, This is finished in magnesium, which offers a more than interesting touch to the hand. Perhaps the only problem is the strip of shiny material on the back, which you can see in the following image, and in which our handprints are constantly marked.

Amazon

On the front we find a 6-inch screen and finished in flush glass with a micro-etching that makes it resistant to almost any bump or problem.

As for the dimensions, we find a device of… ..and with a thickness of only 7,6 millimeters, which makes it the narrowest electronic book that the company directed by Jeff Bezos has launched to the market. Its weight is 180 grams, which does not make it the lightest eReader on the market, but it does allow us to hold it perfectly in hand for hours without getting tired or uncomfortable.

Amazon

Reviewing the exterior of this Kindle Voyage we find a single button on the back With which you can turn the device off or on, which is very striking because the most normal thing in this type of device is to find several buttons to, for example, turn the page. Said button that does not interrupt the front of the device, is quite uncomfortable to use, although its use is infrequent so we could leave this small detail as irrelevant.

The page turn and back buttons have been replaced in this Kindle Voyage by four sensors that we find on the front of the device and that are quite comfortable to use. Finally, on the lower edge of the gadget we find a microUSB port that is used to charge the device, as well as to transfer different files that we want to save on our Kindle.

The screen or how to touch perfection

The screens of other Kindle devices, such as the Paperwhite, were already very good and displayed a definition and sharpness that was difficult to find in other devices of this type on the market. However Amazon has known how to go a step further and has managed to mount a screen that we could say that borders on perfection in this Kindle Voyage.

Stopping at the more technical specifications we can say that it is a 6-inch screen with a density of 300 dpi. In addition, this screen is much brighter than others, which allows you to enjoy reading in a more comfortable way. In case all this seems little to you, it is also self-regulating.

This is undoubtedly one of the great novelties of this Kindle Voyage that It is capable of intelligently detecting the light that exists in the room or place where we are reading and thereby offering us more or less brightness on the screen. Although we can tell you that it works very well, not all eyes or all people respond the same to light, so if we are not too convinced that the device regulates the brightness automatically in each situation, we can always select manually.

Hardware and battery

This Kindle Voyage has improved in almost everything and one of the clear examples is found inside it where Amazon has placed an improved and more powerful processor compared to what we see in the Kindle Paperwhite. With a speed of 1 GHz and supported by a 1GB RAM, we can do almost anything that comes our way and of course we are allowed to do it on this device.

Regarding the internal memory We have 4 GB, which cannot be expanded using a microSD card, but that will be more than enough to save hundreds of books in digital format. In addition, it must be taken into account that with the possibility of storing eBooks in the different cloud services that exist, Amazon's own included, this internal storage should be more than enough for any user.

The battery is usually not a problem in eReaders unlike for example in smartphones and in this Kiondle Voyage we could rate it as outstanding. Not long ago these devices allowed us an autonomy of a few days, but now and despite the fact that they have more and more options and functions, the battery has been growing to offer us more and more autonomy. After trying it and enjoying it thoroughly, we can tell you that The battery of this Kindle will allow us to enjoy reading for approximately 4 weeks, reading an average of 2 hours every day.

However, the battery does not have to last us all the same and it will depend very much on the use you give to the light or the use you make of the device itself. If you spend the day reading with the light at full power, your battery will probably only last about two weeks.

The most positive side is not only the battery life, but it will only take 4 hours to fully charge this Kindle Voyage.

EReader operation, operation and controls

This Kindle Voyage that has been officially sold in Spain for a few weeks now surprised everyone in its official presentation with the incorporation of four sensors that allow you to go back and turn the page, of which we have already spoken at the beginning of this article. In addition to keeping the front of the device much cleaner, this system baptized as PagePress is very comfortable when using it to turn the page or go back.

To make use of it, simply press on it and we can quickly advance to the next page or go back to the previous one.

Amazon

As in most devices of this type We will have several options when reading, among which is the possibility of changing the type of font, its size and also accessing the dictionary to consult the meaning of some words. We will not stop to explain these types of options since we have seen them in other Kindle and they are repeated in all electronic books on the market.

However, it is worth stopping at Amazon's new source, called Bookerly, which, according to the company led by Jeff Bezos, allows us to enjoy and better understand our readings.

Personal opinion after a few weeks of use

Since Amazon Spain sent us the Kindle Voyage I have been using it practically daily to enjoy reading, leaving aside the eReader that I used regularly. From the first moment this Kindle caught my attentionNot only because of its design, which is beautiful but that I personally don't care about exactly the same, but because of the many new functions it incorporates and for the odd interesting function.

Among the positive points that have pleasantly surprised me is without a doubt the screen, which has a definition and sharpness that are difficult to match. The new sensors to turn the page together with the possibility of the screen brightness being regulated automatically are some of the aspects that have surprised and liked me the most.

If I had to put a grade on this Kindle Voyage it would certainly be very high., although its price is a tremendous burden, although as it is usually that is another matter or rather the next section of this complete analysis

Is it worth buying a Kindle Voyage?

This is undoubtedly a question with a very complicated answer And it is that whoever has an eReader, relatively new, I think it is not worth buying this Kindle Voyage, because despite the fact that the screen has a huge definition and offers us new functions and options, spending 189 euros is worth the version more cheap seems excessive to me having a device that allows us to read in a more or less good way.

For those who are looking to buy an eReader or renew the one they have, which has become very outdated, it can be a great option although it is true that there are very good options for a better price. However, this Kindle Voyage offers us a premium eReader, of enormous power and that will be among the best on the market for years.

If I had to buy an ereader this would be one of the candidates but it does not seem to me that it offers such notable improvements as to retire my Paperwhite 2.
I believe that the perfect ereader does not exist and, in any case, it is always the next to come out.
I would like to try this kindle and I know that Amazon offers a trial month but it does not seem right to ask for it without the intention of keeping it so I will settle for reading reviews and opinions.
I would ask you a question: I usually read lying down, holding the device with one hand and it gives me the impression that it must be difficult to hold this device in those circumstances without accidentally turning the page. Or that at least it must be difficult to turn the page in the position I am telling you about. What do you think?

The truth is that the screen and the letters look very sharp although I still think that Eink technology should improve the background of their screens, make it whiter. It is a problem that is corrected with the light but when you turn it off completely or put it to the minimum you realize that the contrast can be improved. Regarding future Kindle, I would ask for 3 things that I know that, unfortunately, are not going to be fulfilled.

    - A folder-based organization system. In my view it is much better than collections. In addition, my experience tells me that when you put many books in the kindle (and nothing exaggerated by the way, let's say a few dozen books) the operation of the device slows down noticeably. Apparently it is due to the storage system, based on links, that the device uses. The system of allowing users to make folders to their liking on the pc and drag them to the device I had in my old Papyre and I like it much more from here to Luna. I do not understand why neither Kobo nor Amazon bet on it.

    - Inclusion of SD cards. I know that Amazon's business is based on cloud services so we will never see it I'm afraid. I already know that the capacity of 4 gb. It is enough for many books but I have much more than that on my hard drive between books, pdfs and various notes and it would be a hoot to always be able to carry ALL the library and not just a small part. But it is also true that as long as the storage system is not changed, as I mentioned in the previous point, it does not make sense to put thousands of files on the Kindle because it becomes a 600.

Let's see how Amazon surprises us this fall ... if there are finally new kindles of course.

After several years, and how bad the article is, when on the official page it says that the kindle voyage lasts 4 weeks (with half an hour of daily reading). So if we do the math, it gives us a total of: approximately 14 hours, and here on its page they indicate that it would last a total of: 56 hours. What a horror article! as no one had noticed.
