JukePop, an indie project for libraries

The world of ebooks are changing many aspects of our society, one of those aspects is the library of the town, the neighborhood or the university, its world is changing little by little. Here we have already told you about companies that are dedicated to meeting the digital needs of libraries, but until now there were no known companies that were dedicated to meeting the needs of indie authors using libraries. In this area it stands out JukePop, a company dedicated to meeting the needs of libraries and indie authors, in turn and differentiating itself from other companies such as Overdrive, JukePop offers the possibility of having DRM-free ebooks that can be used in any eReader, something that frees libraries quite a bit.

Currently JukePop claims to have 6.000 authors in its catalog and more than 8 libraries with about 2 million members. And still, JukePop wants more. That is why they have enabled a campaign in Kickstarter, a crowdfunding campaign with which they want to raise $ 15.000 to improve their software and expand to more libraries. Once they have gotten the funding, they say the library costs will be $ 75 each month.

What software does JukePop offer?

Unlike other companies, the difference of JukePop is in its software, a software that is quite different from others. The JukePop software searches for titles and works based on the votes of its readers and booksellers, thus the list of thousands and thousands of indie titles that many libraries have to undergo is reduced to a few titles. This also makes the works that are chosen quality ebooks, since they have been voted on and have a certain endorsement.

Also, if you are an author, the software helps you publish and have more visibility within the system, so that libraries and users recognize you and have benefits. Even so, JukePop does not specify how it makes payments to indie authors nor does it even mention some of its authors, so its characteristics are really somewhat doubtful for many.

Conclusion

However, I think that JukePop is something new and fresh that many will appreciate and that will make the options of large companies not stagnate. In addition, offering DRM-free ebooks for library users may be a very interesting stimulus for the entire ebook world and the library world.
