Dear Three Wise Men: I want a franken reader

frankenreader

I have been very good this year and, because of being magicians, I know that you can give me the gift I ask for. I have to confess that I love any of my readers madly, they have their flaws, but all of them have provided me with many hours of entertainment and I do not want to be ungrateful. Yet at one point or another, I have dreamed of a franken reader and surely their Majesties of the East (or Harry Potter) can do something to get it for me.

But what is a frankenreader? Well, very simple, surely you all know what I mean, because you will not deny me that at some point I will not have you imagined the ideal reader, the one that has everything that seems best to us of all the readers we know and some that we invent, the one that has that function that at one point we have missed while reading, the one that populates our fantasies and winks at us from some corner of our imagination.

I do not care whether Melchor, Gaspar or Baltasar does it, I describe the reader of my dreams and their majesties will see what they can do, but I want to see it this year under the tree. I already warn from here, it is a dream reader which maybe (but only maybe) equates to a reader unrealistic.

First of all the screen, I love her large, 10 ″. I know many people consider the 6 ″ reader to be ideal, but when you try a 9,7 ″ you find that there is no color. Comics and manga are best read, as are technical books and even novels; the size is very similar to a normal hardcover book, so it's a pleasure to read. And that it be a good screen (electronic ink, of course), one of those so white that the contrast with the black letters is almost perfect and, if possible, with a good HD resolution. To order it in color would be to go overboard, right?

Of course, the capacitive touch screen, but with side buttons. Now most of the touch screen readers tend to eliminate the control buttons, although I find them very useful.

If we go to a big reader, weight is the big drawback, because everyone I know is around half a kilo, but as it is ideal and dreamlike, we can make it slim, ethereal, made with cloud nanoparticles ... Be realistic, Irene, that weighs at least 250 grams because ask for a weight similar to that of the PRS -T1 or T2 would be reckless, not even the Magi could achieve it.

In when the Storage capacityI would ask for unlimited, but one thing is to dream and another to speak nonsense. I think that with 8 GB and a couple of memory slots it would be enough, in that it would look like the old Sony's, like my PRS-505, with two memory slots for SD and Stick Pro Duo.

La aluminum housing, no plastics no matter how successful plastic is now. With this I am not saying that the plastic ones are not acceptable, in fact, they are to some extent responsible for the cheaper devices, but I prefer aluminum. And, given the choice, I will choose something that I like about the Papyre or the Sony T1 and T2, the colors, that each one can decide the color you really like, not just the most common gray, white and black.

A good processorNow they are moving around 800 mHz, but since we are going to put more books in it, let it have a little more, let it reach 1000 or 1200, for example. And this accompanied by a memory that gives it life, that allows you to handle books, notes, images or even audio with ease.

About the light I have not decided yet, in principle I would settle for a nice extra lamp that does not produce uncomfortable reflections. Although if a decent, uniform front lighting was achieved, without reflections or darker areas, the option would be very interesting.

It is important that it be multiformat plates, that supports at least the most common standards: ePUB, pdf, fb2, cbz, cbr, etc. And of course use the search function in dictionaries, how useful it is while you read.

A feature that not all readers include but that is extremely interesting is the text-to-speech, which is nothing more than the ability of the reader to "read" aloud each of the books. So I want it, and that it doesn't sound tinny, but that it be a natural voice.

Obviously it is essential that you have configurable wifi, which is very useful, among other things, for access the OPDS of my Caliber anywhere in the world.

And finally, I want a cool case, like the ones from Tuff Luv, but of course, as he will not be a traditional reader, it will be difficult to find a cover that fits him perfectly. The same thing to do a franken case for a franken reader.

Well that's it, joining pieces from here and from there we have created the most desired reader of the moment (to see if a company takes note and makes it for us, in case the Magi do not see Bricomanía).

As you have seen, it is an article to express dreams, so feel free to do so. What characteristics would your ideal reader have?

Una small update that includes your suggestions:

  • Make it nice (thanks Morgan).
  • That can receive content via e-mail (Kindle type) and with the possibility of receiving content through social media and sync with Evernote (thanks, Luis).

Oops, Irene, you have forgotten to miss that it is very pretty.

True, one like the one in the initial image, all full of screws and with green hair would not be so "ideal." Thanks for reminding me and happy 2013.

Great the frankenlector, I would just add one more option, that can receive content via email, kindle type (is there any other reader that has it?)

Ahh and with the possibility of sharing content through social networks, but especially with Evernote !!!
