Creative Commons reinvents itself

Creative Commons reinvents itself

Not long ago I was talking to you about the licenses that exist on intellectual property and copyright, I was trying to give you an overview of all the tangle of licenses out there, focusing on the main ones. Well, today I wanted to focus on the most popular licenses within the cultural world and even more so within the publishing and written content world. I mean the licenses Creative Commons. These types of licenses were born in response to a need that existed since the GPL licenses that until now were used in this field were not adapted as well as they did in the Software world, that is why the development of a new type of licenses that would be called Creative Commons o CC in its shortened version. This type of license has recently reached Your 4 version where it has not only introduced great changes but in my view, it has reinvented itself, giving these types of licenses the possibility of choosing whether or not to recognize rights. Some of you may be thinking that what atrocities I write, keep reading and you will understand.

Creative Commons 4.0, the possibility to choose

Among the novelties of Creative Commons Notably version 4 It has been totally rewritten, the reason is very simple. When trying to be a global license type, Creative Commons licenses they had contradictory terms in some countries and in others there were some loopholes that made them vulnerable. To solve this, the team of Creative Commons It has been working with its subsidiaries in each country and has rewritten the license in order to change terms and solve those little problems that there were. Continuing in this line, new areas of application have been introduced such as databases or the recognition of other rights that can be accessed or not depending on the form of Creative Commons that is used.

In this version I think that action has been taken, in previous versions, the license and the licensor he had to go to court as an option. In version 4 of Creative Commons a period of 30 days is given to correct the conflict. If it is corrected, the license continues without any problem, if not, the conflict is resolved under the channels that existed until now. What does this contribute? Well, on the one hand, it solves the excess demands that were being created by an unintentional breach. On the other hand, for those who fail to comply with this period, they corroborate their bad intention and by extension facilitate the legal channels. What is missing now is that there is an agreement by which help is provided so that legal agents can apply the corresponding sanctions, because if I fail to comply with a Creative Commons license from an American website and it can't do anything to me, because licenses are of little use. I hope that in time this hole will be solved.

But the big change in licenses Creative Commons In my view, it is the possibility of refusing authorship or recognition of it in the adapted versions or mixtures, being able to choose the author of the readaptation or the author of the work if the name is included or not. This so far represents a great change and progress within licenses and copyrights, since there has always been talk of the rights to authorship, but never (or at least I have never heard it myself) the right to non-authorship and this is being highly valued these days, since there is always some work or publication of which we are not proud or that blurs our CV. To solve there was the option to remove us from authorship but it was impossible once recognized. Now with this license the destination is the possibility of doing this, but as you well know, for the moment it is a timid step, since it can only be done with derivative works or adaptations.

Opinion

If I have to say a summary of this new version of Creative CommonsIs that Creative Commons has confirmed its future, ensuring it and taking it on the right track, the right path for the user and that it is worth considering them to license our works, our websites, articles, etc ... If anyone had any questions to license their works under this type of licenses, I think that with version 4 these doubts have been dispelled, Don't you think?
