The balcony scene between Romeo and Juliet never existed

Romeo AND Juliet

Without risk of being wrong I am convinced that one of the best known scenes in world literature is that of the balcony between Romeo and Juliet. In any theatrical representation it is a scene that is not usually missing and it is also a scene that many couples in love represent posing as the two Shakespearean characters. However and despite what everyone believes, in the work of the English writer there is no balcony and there is no similar scene which is repeated in all movies or plays.

In addition, the word "balcony", as curious as it may seem, does not appear once in "Romeo and Juliet", but neither when the work saw the light there was no balcony in all of England, because that word did not exist.

Checking this is very simple, but if you don't want to have to read this popular work again, we can tell you in advance that there is not a single balcony, nor the famous scene between Romeo and Juliet. And is that when we read for days that this scene did not exist in the book, we quickly began to read it very calmly, to verify it 100%.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary the word "balcony" did not come into use until 1618, two years after Shakespeare's death. and long after "Romeo and Juliet" saw the light in the year 1595.

A constantly repeated lie, it ends up becoming true, and today more than one that saying comes true. In addition, it also shows how little the great classics of universal literature are read and that is that anyone who asks him if he remembers having read the scene of the bancón in "Romeo and Juliet" will tell you yes, and he will also tell you in great detail, without ever having read Shakespeare's play.

Were you one of those who was convinced that the balcony scene between Romeo and Juliet existed?.

Mr. Villamandos, your note is superficial and little informed. First I would have to say that "Romeo and Juliet" was written approximately in ..., you do not refer to the "first folio" of 1623, first printing of Shakespeare's plays (I suppose a serious researcher would go to the original source and in English) . It should be noted: the existence of a word (or not) does not prevent something from existing. On the other hand Shakespeare put very brief or null indications (in fact we do not know because he did not prepare the texts for the press) for directors and actors, so each staging has full freedom. Finally, the fact that there is a balcony does not modify or enrich the meaning of this masterpiece, so dwelling on these minutiae is idle.
