Does Microsoft intend to sell eBooks?

Windows 10 eBooks

Last November, Microsoft published a preview of Windows 10 that included the ePub support in Edge web browser. This seemed like a mere technical test to test the skills of the explorer, but there is something else besides.

What seemed like a mere test of your new Edge web browser, is the preamble to launch from an eBook store. It has been reported today that Microsoft would be ready to fill one of its holes in the online store that it owns.

Like Google, Amazon and Apple, Microsoft sells apps, music and video through its site, but what it does not have in its repertoire are books, a type of product that your competitors do have. According to an internal build of Windows 10, this could change very soon:

Today we were able to get a quick overview of the new eBooks store in an internal build of Windows 10 Mobile, but the feature will also be available for PCs and tablets with Windows 10. The new store will be integrated into the Windows Store as a dedicated section in which users will be able to purchase books from a wide variety of publishers and authors. Buying a book from Windows Store works the same as if you bought a game, an app or a music album, just find what you want and buy it from the button.

That source details that when you buy a book, you will be able to read it from Microsoft Edge with a section dedicated to books in Windows 10. It is there where all the books you have purchased from the Windows Store can be found.

Thanks to EPUB support, you will be able to add bookmarks to any book that is being read, apart from being able to customize the theme of the interface, change the font size as well as the type.

The funny thing about Microsoft's return is that they were one of the pioneers in eBooks in 2000 when they partnered with Barnes & Noble.
