M96 Plus, the large eReader from Onyx Boox arrives in Europe

Onyx Box M96 Plus

Although there are many users who ask for and look for an eReader with a large screen, few devices respond to that demand. Since Amazon abandoned the Kindle DX, the models have been scaled down until there are only a few left.

One of these survivors is the Onyx Boox M96, a model that has its national copies, in the case of Spain is the Tagus Magno and that has been recently updated, nicknamed the Onyx Boox M96 Plus. This eReader still has a 9,7 ”screen and uses the somewhat old Pearl technology despite offering a resolution of 1200 × 825 pixels and 256 PPI.

The ram memory of this device goes from 512 Mb of ram to 1 Gb of ram and the internal storage from 4 Gb to 8 Gb. In addition, the Onyx Boox M96 Plus incorporates an audio output and the possibility of playing mp3 files, ideal for audiobooks and music although also to reproduce the text of the ebooks.

The Onyx Boox M96 Plus will feature Android Kit Kat

Like many Onyx Boox models, the M96 Plus has Android as its operating system. Specifically, it has version 4.0.4 although many sources close to the company confirm that in less than a month it will receive Android Kit Kat, one of the latest versions of Android.

The reading of pdf files in this ereader is very positive although many of those who have tried this new model confirm that the eReader is quite heavy so it is difficult to handle it like other smaller eReaders.

At the moment only one German store has put the Onyx Boox M96 Plus on sale, although in the next few days several stores are expected to start marketing it. The price of this ereader is 309 euros, something quite high if we see the price of the rest of eReaders, although if we take into account the new features it may be interesting for some areas such as business, at least until 13 ”eReaders economic reach the market. We hope that this new model will arrive in Spain very soon, while we will have to opt for foreign websites.

I know I'm heavy for always commenting the same thing but I have to say it: to read novels they arrive with 6-7 ″. To read scientific books, magazines, etc. it takes color. I don't see any point in these large-screen monochrome ereaders, and above all at the price they come at.

It depends on the science you are referring to. As a historian I have had an Onyx Boox M92 and so happy: take notes, highlight text, bookmarks, dictionaries, accept any format, do not give problems with any size or resolution ... Undoubtedly other sciences, and let alone engineering, will need color, but then it is better that they use a tablet. For those of us who are dedicated to the social sciences or those who are dedicated to the humanities, these types of ereaders are worth it, and a lot.
