"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is the book every child should read, according to a study

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Next Thursday the United Kingdom will celebrate Book Day, and on the occasion of the celebration of this day the Sainsbury supermarket chain has carried out a survey on books, in which more than 2.000 parents have participated. All of them have been asked two questions, the first one; What book should all children read before their 16th birthday?. The second; What is the literary character most loved by children?.

The book all children should read before they turn 16 is the classic “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl, closely followed by another great classic that this year celebrates nothing more and nothing less than 150 years, and that is none other than "Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll.

As for the literary character most loved by children, parents have chosen Winnie the Pooh. Next are the gluttonous little Caterpillar, the postman Pat and the engine Thomas. Surely Pat or Thomas will not sound too much for you, but do not worry since they belong to two British television series and that it has its origin in a collection of books.

Returning to those books that all children under 16 should read, the supermarket chain has produced a list of the 50 books most voted by parents. Here are the Top 10 titles on that list;

  1. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
  2. Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
  3. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis
  4. Winnie The Pooh by A. A. Milne
  5. Anna Sewell's Black Beauty
  6. James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
  7. Roald Dahl's Big Good-natured Giant
  8. A Bear Named Paddington from Michael Bond
  9. Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island
  10. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

It is striking that among the first 10 books 3 by Roald Dahl have been cast, and none of the wizard Harry Potter has been cast, but let's not forget that those who voted were the parents and not the children. And no one worry that JK Rowling's books do appear among the 50 books that every child should read.

Now that we know what are the books that every child should read for English parents, The time has come for you to tell us which are the books that in your opinion every child should read. Dare to participate and leave us in the comments of this post your 2 or 3 literary recommendations for any child.
